By Yusuf Razak Dhanani : Before technology became a part of restaurants, guests would come to a restaurant, sit wherever there was a free table, order food, the waiter would take down the order on a notepad, serve food, guest would eat, pay and leave. But now, with technology, the guest's experience is as completely changed as that of chefs, servers and owners, due to a change in technology in the kitchen. Now, with modern kitchen display screens and staffing technology, you can get data-centric insights into what's working well for your restaurant and what's not. This is where technology is making its big impact in the restaurant industry--how guests dine and what pleases them and what doesn't.

In 2015, the
Government of India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Smart
Cities Mission. This is a program that aims at driving economic growth and
improving the quality of life of people by harnessing technology and developing
the area so that citizens of these areas can lead better lives.
For this, 100
Indian cities have been targeted which would be sustainable and
citizen-friendly. The Government's vision includes developing these 100 cities
as satellite towns of already large cities by modernizing them into independent
mid-sized cities.
The Union
Ministry of Urban Development is responsible for implementing this program in
collaboration with the various state governments.
What is a Smart City?
The
most pressing needs of cities are taken into account so that this program can improve their quality of life. A number
of approaches are considered here--best practices of urban planning, digital
and information technologies, change of policies and public-private
partnerships.
The objective of
this program is to promote those cities that provide the core infrastructure
and offer a good standard of living to the people and a clean and sustainable
environment. This program will focus on creating sustainable development so
that replicable models are created which will act as shining examples to other
cities listed under Smart Cities.
Elements of core infrastructure:
These include:
·
Adequate water and electricity
supply
·
Sanitation and solid waste
management
·
Efficient urban public
transport
·
Affordable housing
·
Strong IT connectivity and
digitalization
·
E-governance and citizen
participation
·
Creation of sustainable
environment
·
Safety of citizens,
particularly seniors, women and children
·
Health and education for all
·
Creating congestion-free,
pollution-free localities, boosting local economy and ensuring security for all
·
Creating a road network for
vehicular and public transport and for cyclists and pedestrians
·
Developing and preserving parks
and playgrounds to improve the quality of life of the citizens and reduce the
effects of urban heat
Coverage and Duration:
This
program aims to cover 100 cities in a span of five years, beginning 2015-16 up to
2019-20. After evaluation in 2020, it could be extended, depending on the
outcome of an evaluation.
After two years,
the distribution of Smart Cities will be reviewed and based on their
performance, perhaps the remaining potential Smart Cities may have to be
reallocated by the Ministry of Urban Development.
